These
cards are all illustrated by the artist Ryan and are all
titled
"Leap Year Etiquette." Each has a piece of advice in the language
of etiquette
books, but with the genders reversed.
My favorite
advises that "Any woman who will chew tobacco in the
presence of a gentleman brands herself thereby as a 'roughneck.'"
According to
Nuhn, these cards were published by the E. Nash
Company to
imitate leather
cards. The cards are numbered on
the back, but I do not know
how many are in the series.
The
distinctive back of these cards also makes it clear that these
are not Nash
cards, but
are by the Winsch postcard company. |

I have X133,
X135, X136 and X138. I suspect these cards were published in
1912.
The images seem like different shades of brown, but the variation is due to scanners.
The actual cards are all a rich, leathery brown. |

LEAP
YEAR ETIQUETTE
It is the height of ill manners
for young women to congregate
on street corners to rubber and
grin at the young gentlemen
who are compelled to pass. |
