Arthur Butcher did at least two series for the Inter-Art company. Both series
are lovely, but can be distinguished by the border, the series title, and the
numbering system. On both, stylish women try to entice the recipient into matrimony.
The first series has a white border on the front while the back is titled "Leap
Year Series" and numbered in the 1200s. I have not yet seen one with a postmark,
but I suspect they are from 1916. One card states "I'm coming to the front this
year," which could be a reference to the war or just an indication that the
woman will be speaking up.
The second series has no border, is titled Comique and is numbered in the 3000s.
They seem to be from 1920. The shorter skirts on these women does seem
to support the idea that this is the later series. Regardless, the women in
both series have a coy flirtatiousness to them, and absolutely fabulous outfits! |
