S. Bergman / Bernhardt Wall

If I wuz you I know whom
I would love.

Somebody like you should
love somebody like me!
In 1912, S. Bergman of New York put out a series of cards that were illustrated by Bernhardt Wall.
They are all black and white, watercolor-style images of large-eyed children.

Bernhardt Wall (1872-1956) was a prolific artist who worked for over fifteen different publishers. He is
best known for his Sunbonnet Girls, Little Breeches, and other series. Wall did not always sign his
work and his style could vary dramatically. That said, there are several series of Leap Year cards that
imitate Wall's style in these Bergman cards, including those by Samson Bros. and Taylor Platt& Co.
It is possible that these imitations are, in fact, unsigned Wall artwork. When breaking contracts, or
doing work under the table, a well-known artist might not sign his or her work.

Although artist-signed cards usually command higher prices, Wall cards are readily available and prices
tend to be low.
I do not know how many cards are in the series.

Little girl, this year you
will have to speak for yourself.

Little girl, this year you
will have to speak for yourself.

Little girl, this year you
will have to speak for yourself.

'Aint it true?

The back of the card above.
Bergman issued some cards on
plain cardstock and embossed
the borders on others.
At some point, the card above
has been skillfully colored, the
only Bergman/Wall card I have
seen like this.

One of the little delights of this series is that Wall skillfully varies the
Leap Year hearts at the top so that no two images have the same motif.

If I was a man, I would
like to make some girl happy.

I would sooner be a Leap-yearette
than a howling suffragette
The card at left is clearly signed
by Wall, but lacks the hearts at
the top, making the card
imbalanced. Forgetfulness?
A forgery? We may never know.
Don't think me bold but
it's Leap Year you know.
